Finally some U.S. TV to get excited about...

I know some people may find it hard to believe I don't spend my day just sitting in front of the TV, but we barely watch any U.S. TV channels.  So far we've survived on a diet of DVDs, Dancing with the Stars and Bravo TV.

Our favourite channel is Bravo TV because of all its trashy reality TV shows like Project Runway, Top Chef, Tabatha's Salon Takeover, Shear Genius and Kathy Griffin's My Life on the d-List. They are all so formulaic it's scary, but they are good mindless viewing.  Plus they do catch-up TV show marathons of previous series we've missed which is great.

However, the Fall (Autumn, for all you Brits) TV season is about to start and there's lots of new and returning drama series to get excited about, especially as a lot of shows were affected by the Writers' Strike earlier this year (from November 2007 to February 2008 in fact).

Personally I'm excited about Private Practice, the Grey's Anatomy spin-off series, which returns for a second season.  Addison is so much more of a likable character than the eternally wishy-washy Meredith.

Plus there's the debut of new J.J. Abrams (LOST, ALIAS, Cloverfield) TV show, Fringe, which I'm sure will be a cult favourite in no time at all.  And with the first season cut short by the Writers' Strike, Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles returns for a longer second season (I've yet to watch the first on DVD yet, but it's garnered favourable reviews).

There's also new seasons of fan favourites Desperate Housewives, Grey's Anatomy, Entourage, Heroes, LOST, Lipstick Jungle, Brothers & Sisters, Criminal Minds and the always entertaining Dancing with the Stars.

Driving back from Santa Monica the other day I spotted this billboard poster for an American version of the fabulous Australian comedy Kath & Kim.

It's hard to imagine how they'll translate the quintessentially Australian humour and quirky characters the the U.S., but it also makes you wonder if there are no more original ideas out there in TV land with remakes of The Office, Queer as Folk, American Idol (which started life in the UK a Pop Idol), Dancing with the Stars (Strictly Come Dancing), Spaced and not to mention all the gameshows.

Luckily NBC's Kath & Kim series will star Molly Shannon, as Kath, who's hilarious (she was great in her guest appearances as the crazy neighbour, Val, in Will & Grace).

Other 'new' shows on offer this Fall will be the vampire series True Blood on HBO, Dirty Sexy Money on ABC, a new generation of Beverly Hills '90210' and a new Knight Rider (without 'The Hoff'), plus many more.

So maybe we will be able to find something other than reality shows to watch soon, but I'm sure we'll still watch them too!

Anyway, we're off out to the L.A. Improv tonight to watch some live comedy and have a break from TV.

Let's hope it's funny, as I hear some of the acts can be hit or miss.  Fingers crossed!
