Obama fever strikes - there's a new superhero in town...

Yesterday I was stunned and amazed to see lines formed outside my local comic shop minutes after it had opened.

The reason? I thought it was some celebrity off the TV or writer doing a signing (as often happens at the Golden Apple Comics store). But in fact it was a comic book on sale, but not just any comic.

The cause of the queues outside was issue #583 of Amazing Spider-man starring President-Elect Barack Obama and a storyline that takes place in Washington D.C. on Inauguration Day.

The Marvel Comics title featuring the swearing in ceremony of the 44th President of the United States has already had a third printing due to an overwhelming demand.

And these weren't your usual comic buyers, these were your average person on the street - men, women, teenage girls (people you'd never ordinarily see at a comic store). I'm not sure if people expect this issue to make a quick buck on eBay or whether they just want to commemorate this milestone in history, but there's a lot of love out here for Obama at the moment and he can seemingly do no wrong.

It's a historic and fascinating time here in the States (especially for a 'foreigner' witnessing these events) and I think people are so ready for change, especially after the mess President Bush has left it in.

Just take a look at these pictures for the full extent of peoples admiration for Obama (some may say slightly crazy), support in my West Hollywood neighbourhood for the incoming President.

Plus you'll also find a selection of posters and murals from before the election to show just how popular he was and how much of a cultural icon he has become.
Super Obama
Please don't get me wrong, I totally agree Obama was the best and only choice for President and I think he's a brilliant man who will do great things, but people (artists, the media and the general population) keep portraying Obama with this superhero imagery and an almost messiah-like quality, that he's going to solve the World's (or at least America's problems).

I just hope the public give him some time to make those promised changes, as I'm sure things will get worse before they get better, otherwise there are going to be a lot of phenomenally disappointed people out there.

But here's hoping he can live up to his heroic image and save the day...

How come I don't see these interesting things in Northern CA?! I didn't see anything like that at my local comic book store.
