Sometimes when I'm at the beach with our pup Cooper we catch a glimpse of a seal or a sea otter amongst the waves, so you can imagine how delighted I was to see some dolphins in the ocean at Zuma Beach in Malibu.
With gorgeous sunny weather and soaring temperatures we headed up the coast on Sunday to show our visiting British friend the scenic Malibu coastline.
We're not big beach goers so we'd forgotten how packed Zuma Beach can get along its long stretch of sandy shores, especially of a weekend (so we walked down the beach to avoid the crowds).
We strolled along the waters edge and were quite excited to see the fins of some dolphins appear above the surface of the Pacific Ocean. I have to admit, it would have been a different story if I'd have been in the water and seen a fin emerging from the depths, my first thought would be "Shark!" (thank you Mr. Spielberg for creating a generation of open-water fearing people through your cinematic classic, Jaws ).
Funnily enough we weren't in the water (do you know how cold the Pacific Ocean is?), so I tried to capture the school of dolphins on my handy travel-size camera instead, all the time wishing I had my other camera with the zoom lens and faster shutter speed.
But I did manage to capture a few fins breaking the surface and also turned my lens inwards to snap the beautiful Malibu beach houses that overlook the ocean, which we jealously coveted.
In addition to the sea-life there were also wading birds along the waters edge to entertain us and the soothing ocean view to relax us.
After a bit of sun and exercise (to walk off all those meals out), we headed back to West Hollywood to show our guest another weekend tradition, super-strong cocktails in the sunshine at The Abbey.
The sunshine and heat certainly fills the beaches and bars - we do love Sundays!
Don't worry though, although Cooper wasn't allowed on Zuma Beach, we did treat our pup to the dog beach on Tuesday. More on that tomorrow...
