Prince of Persia is not a total waste of time...

Following some poor reviews I went to see Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time with a bit of trepidation, but I was pleasantly surprised to find that the Disney fantasy movie wasn't a complete waste of time.

One of the problems with the movie though is that it feels like an old-fashioned adventure romp and not in a good way. Even with all the rooftop chases and CGI shenanigans, it still feels a little dated and that's not a good thing when it's up against summer blockbusters like Iron Man 2.

Jake Gyllenhaal, as 'Dastan', does make a great lead action man though and looks suitably buff, even though his English accent does take some getting used to.

Gemma Arterton makes for a feisty 'Princess Tamina', but still disappointingly ends up a bit of a damsel in distress for most of the movie and isn't a very good protector of the 'Dagger of Time'.

I know movies based on video games are traditionally never particularly that good (Doom, Max Payne, Super Mario Bros. Street Fighter, Hitman to name but a few disasters), but there is very little plot here beyond an evil uncle, a quest through the desert and some mystical mumbo jumbo.

The movie is also slightly over long and could do with shaving off at least twenty minutes or so.

The movie is watchable and enjoyable, but it lacks originality and it does tend to beg, borrow and steal from other films. To be honest at one stage the 'Hassansins', the films mystical bad guys, look like the 'Dark Riders' straight out of The Lord of the Rings trilogy, and when our hero and his merry band are trekking through the snow-covered mountains it does feel like fairly standard quest movie fare.

I give Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time three *** stars for being an entertaining 'sand and sandals' romp, but the Disney movie I'm really getting excited for is Tron Legacy, due out on my birthday in December, which looks like it's bringing something fresh and exciting to the big screen.

Tonight we're off to see the new romantic comedy 'Killers', starring Katherine Heigl and Ashton Kutcher, so I'm hoping that's as funny as the trailer looks. Maybe a few cocktails beforehand will help...
