Is The Last Airbender M. Night Shyamalan's last chance...?

M. Night Shyamalan does it again, and not in a good way. If you thought The Happening was bad, wait until you see The Last Airbender. I truly feel for all the fans of the original animated series that this movie was based on, because they can't be happy right now.

So what's wrong with the movie you ask? Well basically everything, from the casting of awful actors to terrible special effects, a movie that doesn't really flow and characters that you don't care about at all.

What could have been an action-packed fantasy adventure just feels very heavy-handed, badly paced and uninspiring. In the right director's hands this could have been an epic movie, with the potential for almost 'Lord of the Rings' type battles.

The martial arts scenes in the film are embarrassing and it all looks very amateurish and cheap, like it was a low budget TV series, not a big budget Hollywood movie. All the stunts look very telegraphed, and well, like stunts, there's literally no magic in this film.

Shyamalan actually has to have a voice over narrator to explain what's going on as he's such a bad storyteller. It really is hard to watch and I found myself cringing through most of the movie.

I love a good fantasy film and there was such potential here - a quest in a world where people can 'bend' the very elements of water, earth, fire and air to their will, where amazing creatures and a spirit world exist, it's a rich mythology which could have been spectacular. Sadly it isn't and is only worth two ** stars at best.

The Sixth Sense had a great twist that no one saw coming, Unbreakable endeared itself to my comic book loving sensibilities, Signs piqued my inner sci-fi geek, The Village was totally predictable, Lady in the Water was an embarrassment and nothing really happened in The Happening (and it was the trees? Really?).

All those movies were M. Night Shyamalan creations and so it's sad to see that even when his ego isn't causing him to make bad films he can still mess up someone else's ideas.

So save yourself the time and money and watch another movie instead.

Let's hope Christopher Nolan's 'Inception' doesn't disappoint when I see it on Saturday evening...
