The Kids Are more than All Right...

The last few days I've been catching up with Summer movies at the cinema after a couple of weeks being tied up with house-moving, everything from the supernatural Twilight: Eclipse, element wielding Airbenders, alien Predators and mind-bending shenanigans in Inception.

So it was refreshing to go and see a somewhat down-to-earth comedy drama about a very modern family. The Kids Are All Right has a great cast and is equally funny, sweet and moving.

The story is about the children of a lesbian couple who want to meet their sperm donor father. Annette Bening and Julianne Moore make great mothers and believable loving partners, whilst Mark Ruffalo puts in a fine performance as the biological dad.

It's wonderfully filmed with some great moments and not to give too much away but when Annette Bening's character makes a certain discovery, the scene is filmed beautifully, with real impact.

Josh Hutcherson and Mia Wasikowska (of Alice in Wonderland fame) make for great kids and Mia's scene at the very end of the movie is very emotional. Superb acting all around really.

The film is also filled with lots of surprises. I didn't really know any of the plot of the movie beyond the basic premise, so I was continually surprised by the twists and turns the movie took. Even though there's a lot of intentional humour, there's also some very insightful emotional elements to the story, with the characters doing things that you really wish they hadn't.

It really is refreshing to see a 'good' movie with a gay context to it. It has big name Hollywood actors, is well filmed and has a strong story, without being too stereotypical.

With wonderful performances and characters you care about I give The Kids Are All Right four **** stars.

Next on my viewing list of new cinematic releases is Salt, the new espionage thriller with Angelina Jolie, and I also still want to see Toy Story 3 and The Sorcerer's Apprentice.

Let's hope the good films keep coming...
