Stanley Park's S.S. Empress dragon figurehead...

Totem poles are not the only thing of interest in Vancouver's Stanley Park and this wooden replica of the S.S. Empress of Japan's figurehead can be found near the Girl in Wetsuit statue.

This colourful dragon figurehead overlooking the harbour was on the ship which carried Vancouver's commerce to The Orient for thirty-one years from 1981 to 1922.

Apparently the original carving was restored in 1928 and this is a replica cast from that restored figurehead.

For a slightly more macabre figurehead check out this one from the Queen Anne's Revenge ship in Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides.

Replica or original, it makes for a colourful addition to the park, especially on a nice sunny day...
