The Arlington West memorial at Santa Barbara's Stearns Wharf...

Every time I see the Arlington West memorial beside Stearns Wharf in Santa Barbara I'm always moved by all the wooden crosses representing the deaths of U.S. serviceman and servicewomen in Iraq.

This evocative installation by the Veterans for Peace has become a real Sunday staple, just like the Santa Barbara Arts and Crafts Show along Cabrillo Boulevard.

I believe it's erected twice a month now, but whenever we visit after a morning at Hendry's Beach with Cooper we always seem to see it.

Obviously now that President Obama has outlined his exit strategy from Iraq and with Iran refusing to curtail its worrying nuclear development program, the concern of some people is that America and its allies may invade Iran.

I don't for a moment pretend to understand all the issues in the Middle East, but it's astonishing to think that so much money is readily being pumped into the U.S. military and yet people are still fighting against Obama's healthcare reforms when he's trying to help American citizens have a better way of life in his own country.

Sometimes it really does seem like a mad, mad world, although I think I'll always be a bit of a bleeding heart liberal when it comes down to it...
