2012 Union Square Hearts of San Francisco...

I'm a big fan of the Hearts of San Francisco charity project and always make sure I check out the latest painted heart sculptures on display in Union Square whenever I visit.

I'm usually in San Francisco in may for the 12k Bay to Breakers fun run, but this year I took a break from that to run my first San Francisco Marathon at the end of July. The hearts were a much more popular tourist attraction and so it was harder to get great shots this time around.

The one-of-a-kind creatives make for a really nice addition to the four corners of Union Square, so I'm always really distressed when I see that someone has scratched away the name and details of artist on the plaques for the hearts. Such unappreciative vandals.

Anyway, I really like this 'All Day, All Night' heart by Marianne Bland from 2012, which shows the Bay Bridge in sunlight and illuminated at night, on the corner of Post and Stockton Streets.

What I love about this sculptural project is that the majority of the designs immediately evoke the quintessential flavour of the City by the Bay, like Eileen David's 'San Francisco Housescapes' heart from 2012.

This painted heart can be found on the bustling corner of Powell and Geary Streets.

On another busy corner, at Geary and Stockton Streets, you'll currently find an 'untitled' heart from 2011 by Andrew Schoultz which reflects his aesthetic for the familiar and fantastical, reflecting the political and environmental climate.

Then on the fourth corner at Powell and Post Streets, you'll still find Tony Bennett's Golden Gate Bridge Heart.

Further downtown in the Financial District I also spied this other heart called 'Be Inspired' by Paula Best from 2004, in the lobby of an office building on Pine Street.

As you can see this charity fundraising program for the San Francisco General Hospital Foundation has certainly been inspiring people for many years and it's a shame that L.A.'s own Community of Angels sculptural project didn't continue.

If you like these hearts, be sure to also check out these other Hearts of San Francisco sculptures on display from previous years.

On our anniversary today I dedicate these fabulous hearts to my partner of thirteen years, Charlie, with whom I share all my amazing adventures.

A part of our hearts still belong in San Francisco...
