Anita Baker brings some soul to the Hollywood Bowl...

Last night on a beautiful summer's evening we enjoyed the soulful jazz stylings of Anita Baker at the Hollywood.

It's only our second appearance at the Bowl this year and probably our last, but any concert in the open air amphitheatre always reminds me how much I enjoy seeing a performance there. I'm not a huge Anita Baker fan, I don't really know her music aside from the obvious songs like 'Sweet Love', but she had a wonderful voice and was a real crowd pleaser.

Her opening act was the younger and quirkier Grammy-winner, Esperanza Spalding, who may not be everyone's cup of tea, but I thought she had real stage presence and was a real entertainer.

When Anita Baker came on in the second half she really seemed to be having fun being in front of the packed house and wittily reminded everyone that there were real people singing behind the microphones and real people playing musical instruments on stage with her. It was certainly a great 'live' performance.

Her smooth voice, good spirits, and a glass of wine or two, really made for a very enjoyable evening indeed.

If this is to be my last Hollywood Bowl event of the season, a fun time was had by all...
