Cool movie, music and video game billboards around L.A. in September 2013...

Oh my it's been a busy month for billboards this month, whilst the new fall season TV shows have monopolised L.A.'s streets, that doesn't mean there've not been lots of impressive movie, music and video game billboards filling the skyline too.

Movie billboards
What happened to JD Salinger movie billboard
Ever wonder what happened to the reclusive author of The Catcher in the Rye? Well if you did, then the documentary film Salinger from Shane Salerno is for you apparently. I've not seen the movie, but this shocking red and yellow colour clash billboard certainly made me want to find out more.
The Fifth Estate movie billboard
Speaking of uncovering secret histories, The Fifth Estate, seeks to dramatise the events behind the Julian Assange WikiLeaks scandal which made available to the public war footage and thousands of secret military documents via the internet. Benedict Cumberbatch continues his rise to fame by portraying the editor-in-chief and founder of the notorious news-leaking website.
Captain Phillips movie billboard
Another movie based on a true story is Tom Hanks new thriller Captain Phillips. This film by by Paul Greengrass, the director of The Bourne Supremacy and Ultimatum,  is based on the hijacking of a U.S. cargo ship by Somali pirates, the first of its kind in 200 years.
Giant Riddick movie billboard
Meanwhile in the world of make believe, Vin Diesel returned for a third live-action installment of his pet sci-fi project, Riddick. It took nine years to make this sequel to the 2004 box office bomb, The Chronicles of Riddick, so after this new movie flopped, I wonder how long it will take to make another film like the action star wants to.
Gravity movie billboard
Like a lot of people I didn't squander my money on Riddick, but I am eagerly anticipating Alfonso Cuarón's Gravity, which sees Sandra Bullock and George Clooney teamed together as astronauts on a damaged orbiting space shuttle.

This science fiction movie seems like just my cup of tea and I love this and all the Gravity movie billboards I've seen so far, so be sure to check the other ad creatives out at my Daily Billboard blog.
Giant Rush movie billboard
Another movie inspired by a true story is Chris Hemsworth's new Formula One drama, Rush. The Thor star gets the super-sized ad treatment in Hollywood for his portrayal of British playboy racing driver 'James Hunt' in this tale of his infamous rivalry with 'Niki Lauda'.
Generation Iron movie billboard
Another sporty billboard that caught my eye this month (I wonder why), was for Generation Iron, a documentary about bodybuilders training to compete in the Mr. Olympia competition.
300 Rise of an Empire movie billboard
And speaking of muscles, here's a teaser for the bloody sequel to 300, Rise of an Empire. It's not released until next March, but I spied this billboard over at Warner Bros. Studios in Burbank this month.
Hobbit 2 Desolation of Smaug movie billboard
Another sequel being teased by the major film studio was The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug. I'm still dumbfounded by the decision to stretch the smallest of the Tolkien books across three films, which smacks of corporate greed, and even though I enjoyed the first installment I hope this new movie has something original to offer and not just more of the same.
Insidious 2 movie billboard
2011's most profitable movie, Insidious, received a sequel this month with Insidious: Chapter 2, continuing the horror franchise and torment of the Lambert family.

If you're a fan of the movies, be sure to check out these original scary ghost costumes and prop from Insidious: Chapter 2 on display.
The Family movie billboard
This month Robert De Niro returned to the world of organised crime with The Family, a mafia comedy which sees his family placed under witness protection from the mob in France.
Cloudy with Chance of Meatballs 2 extension billboard
After a glut of animated movies this summer, some hits and some misses, Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2 hopes to capture cinema goers imagination with this fun sequel.

These eye-catching billboards featuring 'Sam Sparks' and policeman 'Earl Devereaux' illustrate that something big was left over from the first movie's unusual weather in the form of mutated food creatures.
Cloudy with Chance Meatballs 2 special movie billboard
If you like these special extension ads, be sure to check out more billboards for Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2 from around the streets of L.A.

Game billboards
Giant Grand Theft Auto V video game billboards
The big gaming news this month was the release of Grand Theft Auto V, which sped past the $1 billion mark in just three days. This impressive trio of painted wall murals, showcasing the characters featured in the latest installment of the über-popular video game franchise was spied in Downtown L.A. on the side of the Figueroa Hotel.

Music billboards
Electric Pet Shop Boys Live Shrine LA billboard
The Pet Shop Boys are back in L.A. to support their new album release Electric (which is pretty good in my humble opinion), I'm not going to see them this time, but check out these photos from the Pet Shop Boys at the Greek Theatre in September 2009 which was a great concert.
Elton John Diving Board album billboard
Elton John has a new album coming out called The Diving Board, but frankly I'm not too pleased with the piano-playing Rocket Man, as he's refusing to boycott Russia given their recent anti-gay discrimination and will perform concerts there. He says he doesn't want to deprive gay people from seeing him perform, but methinks it's more about him lining his own pockets. Sadly until the Russian government realise people are outraged by their homophobic actions they'll just keep persecuting their citizens.

If you like all these ads, be sure to stay tuned in the days to come for round-ups of this month's fashion, drinks and lifestyle billboards, plus a massive onslaught of new season TV show billboards all vying for your attention.

In the meantime let me know which is your favourite ad creative from all the movie, music and game billboards featured today...
