Ghoulish sights at West Hollywood's Halloween Carnaval 2013...

With around 500,000 people crammed along Santa Monica Boulevard for West Hollywood's annual Halloween Carnaval, the festivities are not for the faint of heart, especially when the street is haunted by terrors from your favourite big screen movies, people's wicked imaginations and your own nightmares.

This my friends is a round-up of some of the best horror and supernatural costumes stalking the boulevard this year, where you'll see your more traditional Halloween costumes like vampires, werewolves, ghosts, skeletons and of course, flesh-eating zombies.

Besides the crush of the thousands of revelers, especially as the night progresses and the party atmosphere gets even wilder (and drunker), I always think that the WEHO Carnaval is not a place for small children or animals of any kind (no matter how much it compliments your Halloween outfit) with all the scary, blood-soaked monsters playing their parts to perfection. In fact, this red-eyed werewolf and beastly antlered creature were a real crowd pleaser and brilliant photo opportunity this year.

Fans of the Hellraiser movies would have gotten a thrill out of meeting classic horror monster, Pinhead.

Plus more recent additions to the horror pantheon, like this Black Bride costume (far left) from the ultra successful Insidious movies. If you like this, you'll probably also love checking out these original Insidious: Chapter 2 movie costumes on display.

I'm a real fan of Jake Gyllenhaal's breakout film, Donnie Darko, so I got a kick out of seeing this creepy Frank the Bunny costume working the streets.

Then there's also favorite slasher movie villains like the axe-wielding miner from My Bloody Valentine and Michael Myers from the Halloween horror franchise.

After six years of attending the Carnaval I'm starting to recognize some of these characters, their costumes and the roles they play year after year.

Of course every Frankenstein's monster deserves a bride of his own and I may not have had bolts in my neck, but my zombie bride costume was certainly of the undead variety for this classic horror monster.

I'm also a real sucker for a good skeleton costume, whether it be a store-bought or a home-made creation. Jack Skellington from The Nightmare Before Christmas always seems to be a fan-favourite costume choice one this special night.

And speaking of the wacky world of Tim Burton, even though 1990's Edward Scissorhands was more of tortured soul in the fantasy romance, he still makes for a cool visual at Halloween with his blade fingers.

And it wasn't just men emulating Johnny Deep this year, as I also saw a few ladies out there dressed up as the black leather-wearing character.

Of course, being L.A. with its high Mexican population, at this time of year there's always lots of elaborate costumes influenced by the Day of the Dead, or Dia de Los Muertos festivities.

And just as there's always great partner costumes, there's always a great show of group costumes at West Hollywood's Halloween celebrations.

In fact I felt quite at home this year amongst this creepy, colourful doll trio.

And I finally realized how hard it can be to get around in a dress when you have thousands of people around you. I can't count the amount of times I got whiplash from someone stepping on my wedding dress train or veil.

Fortunately the horrific sights along the boulevard made it all worthwhile, there's nothing like a scary blood-drenched zombie creature to give you a fright (and this look would surely give small kids nightmares).

On the night there's always a few devils enjoying the party, no doubt enslaving a few souls as they go.
No matter how crazy busy it gets, the Halloween Carnaval is one of my favorite nights of the year and I love capturing as many memories of the night as possible and I'm always blown away by people's creativity, whether it be their amazing makeup, the materials they use to make their costumes or just the sheer originality of their look.

I also love how everyone can walk around and mingle with everyone else and it's not just a parade that you see from afar and can't interact with. This is Hollywoodland after all and for one night, the whole of the stretch of West Hollywood is your stage.

It's just brilliant how 'in character' people can be with their costumes and are always willing to put on a show for a photo (and do let me know if you see yourself in one of these pictures).

And if you thought this year was busy, just wait until next year when the festivities take place on a Friday night and more people flock to Santa Monica Boulevard to enjoy the fun.

Let the countdown begin to next Halloween, but if you like these creative outfits, be sure to also check out more West Hollywood Halloween Carnaval costumes from this year.

Stay tuned in the days to come for even more fun looks and costume inspiration for 2014...
