May's new movie billboards lining the skies of L.A...

This month aside from an abundance of Emmy Consideration TV billboards, the skies have been filled with lots of special extensions, super-sized creatives and cool billboards for movie sequels. Here's a selection of the cool sights from the world of motion pictures capturing my attention in May.

How to Train Your Dragon 2 movie billboard
First up is this fantastic winged special extension for the sequel to DreamWorks How to Train Your Dragon, featuring a more grown up 'Hiccup' the Viking and his Night Fury dragon, 'Toothless'. I was pleasantly surprised by the story and emotion of the first film, so I hope this installment can deliver again.

X-Men Days of Future Past movie billboard
Another movie billboard which looked great as a special extension was this one for X-Men: Days of Future Past.

I'm torn over how I felt about the movie as this is one of my all-time favourite X-Men comic book storylines, it's a classic time-travel adventure. Although the movie is well down by the returning director Bryan Singer and old and new casts, the film franchise by 20th Century Fox continues to mix up the continuity of the X-Universe and give characters new powers, or in many cases nothing to do at all aside from a brief cameo. Compared to the official Marvel Studios movies I'm left feeling disappointed and emotionless, rather than excited and satisfied by films like this and The Amazing Spider-man 2.

Now where do I start about the fourth installment of the Transformers franchise? They are not my favourite films, they tend to be juvenile and favour big explosions over storyline or character development. Let's hope the addition of Mark Wahlberg to replace Shia LaBeouf and the Dinobots can improve things, although I'm not convinced they will.

Meanwhile, here's another excellent super-sized billboard for Disney's live-action Maleficent origin story. Angelina Jolie looks simply stunning and visually striking towering over L.A.'s Sunset Plaza and I can't help but think this iconic look will be one of the number one Halloween costumes this year.

Giant Edge of Tomorrow movie billboard
Another giant-sized creative adorning the side of L.A.'s Sofitel Hotel this month is for Tom Cruise and Emily Blunt's new sci-fi flick, Edge of Tomorrow. At the moment the ad creatives look a look like video game billboards and I'm wondering whether this will be another Oblivion flop for Tom Cruise.

Another sequel arriving this Summer is for the horror franchise The Purge. The first movie was a classic home invasion tale in an America where all crime is legal for twelve hours, including murder, where the emergency services shut down. This time the mayhem and slaughter takes to the streets of L.A. in The Purge: Anarchy.
A Million Ways to Die in the West movie billboard
Two genres which are not amongst my favorites are Westerns and comedies, so imagine my delight at Seth MacFarlane's new Wild West comedy, A Million Ways to Die in the West. At least these special extension billboards are eye-catching, but not as good as these funny billboards for Ted, his last movie.

After The Wedding Singer and 50 First Dates, Adam Sandler and Drew Barrymore teamed up for a third time in their new romantic comedy, Blended, and it was a box office flop, so hopefully there won't be a fourth film.
22 Jump Street movie billboard
On the other hand the comedy stylings of Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum had a somewhat unexpected chemistry and success in the movie remake of 21 Jump Street, so let's hope they can recapture the magic for the sequel, 22 Jump Street, where the police partners go undercover in University.
Think Like a Man Too movie billboard
In the sequel to 2012's Think Like a Man, the cast reunite in the Tim Story movie for a wedding in Vegas. Now amongst all that drinking, gambling and partying, what could possibly go wrong.
Friended to Death movie billboard
One movie ad creative which really caught my eye because I thought it captured the spirit of our social media generation, was this Friended to Death billboard, about a guy who fakes his own death to see how his friends would react.
Petals on the Wind Lifetime movie billboard
Another movie sequel appearing on TV this time was for Lifetime's follow up to their Flowers in the Attic remake. Petals on the Wind is the next installment in V. C. Andrews book series and this is the first time the story has been adapted as a TV movie.

Meanwhile this month Moviefone's new ad campaign confused me, as it made it look like this was more a dating or partying app than anything to do with watching movies or TV shows.

Is it for a streaming service or a ticket buying service, frankly I'm confused.

In the world of video games Wolfenstein: The New Order brought the battle to the skies of L.A.

David Bowie Google Play your heart out billboard
And in the world of music and technology, Google Play swapped its movie-themed ads for new music billboards along the Sunset strip, including this billboard featuring a classic David Bowie.

As you can see it's been a busy month, with lots of variety in the skies of L.A. I've also noticed they are building even more billboards along the Sunset Strip, so it's only going to get even more crowded and harder to get passerby attention in the future, so all those ad agencies and internal creative departments had better bring their A-game to stand out.

A Friday escape to Huntington Dog Beach...

Today I needed a break from computers, billboards, costumes, chores and everyday life and escaped with Cooper to Huntington Dog Beach to enjoy the sun and sandy shoreline.

It was the perfect temperature and a welcome respite from the gloomy 'May Grey' of recent days, plus it only took about an hour to get there and back as the traffic was moving, and at the end of it I had one satisfied Yellow Labrador.

As you can see, Cooper had a fun time chasing tennis balls in and out of the surf, and there's nothing like feeling the sand between your toes and the salty wind on your face to take your mind off everything else.

Huntington Dog Beach is great as you can walk for miles up the shoreline with your pup off-leash, and even though the oil rigs spoil the view in the distance, it's still a fantastic beach in Southern California so you really can't complain.

It's such a shame that dogs are not allowed on L.A. County beaches, like in Santa Monica which is surely big enough, as it would certainly make taking Cooper to the beach easier and less of a drive.

At the end of the day though, it's nice to take a break and mix things up for our pup. Runyon Canyon is great, but it can get tedious day after day, especially in the heat, no matter how early you get there.

As I type this he is wiped out at my feet, snoring, and I think my job is done for the day...

Cool TV billboards around L.A. in May 2014...

Even though there's been a ton of competition in the skies of L.A. this month, it's the TV genre that has dominated the city skyline, with lots of billboards for new Summer season shows and for cable channels and networks hopeful to garner some Emmy Award nominations this year.

First up, proving that vampires are not dead yet on the small screen, it's a billboard for the TV series remake of 1996's From Dusk Till Dawn.

Keeping to the fantastical and AMC's reality TV circus of horrors is back for a sophomore season, this time with some proper outdoor advertising support like this ad creative of performer 'Morgue' sword-swallowing. If you like this arresting visual, be sure to check out the other striking Freakshow season two billboards.

As I mentioned, this month it really has been about the Emmy Consideration billboards popping up for various shows, like this Something Human Emmy ad campaign for The Walking Dead.
True Detective Revolutionary Emmy 2014 billboard
And just like last year the premium cable subscription channel HBO has delivered a truly cohesive and captivating campaign for its diverse dramas, comedies and informational shows. Be sure to take a look at these HBO 2014 Emmy Consideration billboards, like this 'Revolutionary' True Detective creative, for shows like Game of Thrones, Girls, Silicon Valley, Veep and more besides.

Other channels like Comedy Central use humour to get their point across and encourage voters, like this hilarious and timely billboard for comedy duo Key & Peele, which pokes fun at Donald Sterling and his racist remarks that have ultimately forced him to sell his stake in the L.A. Clippers basketball team.

And speaking of basketball, who knew there'd be just as much drama off the court as on for the NBA Playoffs.

Back to those Emmy campaigns, and even though Amazon Studios didn't support their first original series, Alpha House starring John Goodman, when it launched, they certainly seem to want to benefits of being an Emmy nominated and winning comedy show.

One show which was giving it everything they had for their seventh and final season was this fantastic retro-style Emmy campaign for Mad Men, which feature the show's beloved characters like 'Joan Holloway' and 'Don Draper' in mock advertisements for products from the 60's. The clever billboards totally live up to the credentials of the fictional Madison Avenue advertising agency they work for.

Even though there were many Emmy consideration billboards pooping up this month, there were also more than a few ad creatives for totally new shows, like this edgy teaser for HBO's The Leftovers, which deals with the aftermath when 2% of the world's population mysteriously vanish and friends, family and loved ones have to deal with being left behind.

From Dusk Till Dawn is not the only movie to get a TV remake this month either, as Roman Polanski's 1968 horror classic Rosemary's Baby gets the NBC mini-series treatment with Zoe Saldana in the lead role instead of Mia Farrow.

More supernatural goings on also came this month in the form of Showtime's original series Penny Dreadful set in Victorian London, which takes its name from the cheap sensational pulp fiction publications from the 19th century.
Halt and Catch Fire series premiere billboard
From Olde London Town, to America of the 80's and AMC's new drama Halt and Catch Fire, which focuses on the real-life technological race to build a better home computer.
Night Shift series premiere billboard
From the battles between Macs and PCs to the battle for life in NBC's new medical drama, The Night Shift. It's different because it takes place at night, such originality.

Absaroka County Sheriff 'Walt Longmire' is back for a third season with this cool illustrated ad creative.
Perception season 3 billboard
And Eric McCormack returns for a third season of visions, clues and crime-solving in TNT's Perception.

More crime drama comes from the rookie show Gang Related, when a gang taskforce cop finds himself torn between his job and the street gang he's indebted to from his youth.

And speaking of torn loyalties, in Starz new series Power, a notorious drug dealer most choose between his illegal life of crime and his new respectable Manhattan nightclub. Choose wisely, indeed.

Back in the 'real' world and this season three billboard for National Geographic's Life Below Zero show's the harsh reality of living in the wilds of Alaska, battling snowstorms, man-eating beasts and bitter winters.

An in a similar vein, the History channel's Mountain Men is back for third season of survival in the wilderness.
David Spade My Fake Problems comedy special billboard
From the harsh reality of nature to the fake problems of David Spade, and this billboard for his comedy special stand-up show surely hits the mark with its L.A. audience, where your main worries are the latest health fads and which pool party will help advance your career more.

Another show back for a third season is Adult Swim's sketch show Loiter Squad, which had this fun faux call girl billboard to promote the new episodes.

And my pick of the new sitcoms which I predict won't last beyond one season is NBC's Undateable, which doesn't really to try to capture your imagination and if this reflects the quality of Chris D'Elia's new series then I don't hold out much hope for it.
America's Got Talent season 9 billboard
With the U.S. version of The X-Factor cancelled and American Idol's ratings waning, America's Got Talent is back for a ninth season this Summer, so I really hope they have some fun tricks up their sleeve to keep viewers tuning in.

Meanwhile over on CNN their new ten-part series The Sixties, explores the decade that shaped America, from the assassination of JFK to the Cold War, the moon landing and the civil rights movement (they had me with the picture from the camp 60's Batman show which I loved as a kid).

And finally for this installment of TV billboards, here's the debut season billboard for DreamWorks Turbo FAST cartoon series exclusively on Netflix (based on last year's Turbo animated movie).

As you can see it's been a crowded skyline this month and I always love this time of year when all the studios are shouting for attention to garner accolades for their shows, rather than simply trying to drive viewership.

Summer fashion, fragrance and beauty billboards around L.A. in May 2014...

Aside from the heatwaves mixed with gloomy, misty mornings, you can tell Summer is on the way in L.A. by the proliferation of scantily-clad beauties and more colourful apparel in the city's skies. Here's a glimpse of some of the stylish fashion, fragrance and cosmetics billboards spotted around Los Angeles this May.

As it's almost pool party and beach season H&M has rolled out its swimwear models to make women start thinking about losing those extra pounds to look good in their skimpiest bikinis this Summer.

And it's not just the women, as 2(X)ist continues to advertise its range of male swimwear in the heart of West Hollywood, where everyone wants to have the perfect abs, pecs and biceps (although they often forget about the legs).

Fortunately if you don't have a killer body, the message is you can always cover up with a simple t-shirt and some fun shorts too.

Tommy Hilfiger also wants to get into the spirit with this latest beachwear collection billboard for men, women and kids along the Sunset Strip.

In addition to swimwear, another sign of Summer is the abundance of sunglasses billboards, like these recent Gucci and Prada eyewear ads, and this creative for Calvin Klein's Platinum Label.

And maybe not sunglasses, but Tom Ford obviously wants to captitalise on the eyewear trend with this latest offering standing out in the skies along Sunset Plaza.

Meanwhile Guess had another giant-sized billboards this month, which is the last ad site you see along the Sunset Strip before you leave West Hollywood and enter Beverly Hills westbound, where there are generally no outdoor billboards.

Over by the Hollywood & Highland Center this month, British designer brand Burberry had a more causal look to appeal to a younger target market.

And fashion brand Loft continued to showcase its relaxed looks for Summer.

With a dedicated billboard to introduce their Riviera short collection, which come in lots of fun colourful prints.

Rodeo Drive's Tory Burch was back in the skies of Sunset Strip with this symmetrical billboard design, which you seem to see a lot of in fashion advertising.

And Lindsey Wixson was back beside the Chateau Marmont Hotel in the latest flirty billboard from the Give me Aldo ad campaign.

Meanwhile online fashion retailer Net-A-Porter.com debuted this eye-catching creative to encourage you to keep shopping at home and get it delivered to your door.

Fragrance and beauty billboards

In the world of fragrances, Chanel brought Keira Knightley to the skies of L.A. in a new ad for their designer Coco Mademoiselle scent.

And followed that billboard up with this cosmetics ad creative for its Summer makeup range, just in time for those sunny days at the beach.

As you can see there was lots of Summery style inspiration around the streets of L.A. this month, all competing for your attention against the latest drinks and lifestyle billboards, plus Summer movie blockbusters and new season TV shows.
