Head-turning TV billboards lining L.A.'s skies in May 2016...

This month there were so many TV themed billboards that I decided to present the new and returning shows separately from all the Emmy consideration billboards filling the city skyline. It's also that time of the year when the weather really doesn't want to cooperate with its gloomy 'May Grey' conditions, plus I was away for almost two weeks, but there was still a wealth of billboard ads trying to grab passersby attention.

TV billboards
LGBT viewers deserve better billboard
First up is an important billboard highlighting the treatment and positive representation of LGBT characters in TV shows, especially in light of many gay characters death this season on The 100, The Walking Dead and Blindspot to name but a few. Gay lives matter too, and we shouldn't be treated as just a convenient disposable plot line, or a bunch of tired old stereotypes.
Red Nose Day Special 2016 USA billboard
Another cause-related billboard in the skies of L.A. this month was for America's second official Red Nose Day, helping to raise funds for people and children living in poverty around the world. This ad creative featuring loads of celebs isn't as eye-catching as the Statue of Liberty 3D Red Nose billboard from last year though.
BrainDead series premiere billboard
The skies were filled with a whole smattering of new shows this month, including this cool cut-out special extension billboard for BrainDead, the new political series from the husband and wife writing team behind The Good Wife.
Giant Animal Kingdom series premiere billboard
One of my favourite visuals this month was this super-sized billboard for TNT's Animal Kingdom series. The burning palm trees certainly catch your eye for this television adaptation of the 2010 Australian crime drama film of the same name.
Preacher series premiere billboard
More arresting imagery this month was provided by AMC's small screen adaptation of the Vertigo Comics series, Preacher. This upside-down place of worship and clever 'beginning is nigh' tagline really helps the billboard stand out for the supernatural series.
Feed the Beast series premiere billboard
Another show on AMC pairs David Schwimmer and Jim Sturgess together as old buddies running a New York restaurant and all the shady dealings that can involve with gangsters and corrupt officials alike.
Queen of the South series billboard
Over on USA Network Alice Braga stars as the Queen of the South this Summer, a 'Queenpin of crime' based on Arturo PĂ©rez-Reverte's best-selling book La Reina Del Sur.
Guilt series premiere billboard
Meanwhile Freeform (formerly ABC Family) has a new drama about an American student in London whose roommate is murdered, with her being the prime suspect in the death.
Roots TV remake billboard
This Memorial Day the iconic slave drama Roots got a mini-series remake for a new generation on History.
Hell on Wheels final episodes billboard
Aside from all the new freshman shows, there were many fan-favourites returning to the skies in May. Hell on Wheels had its fifth and final season split in two, and now it's the end of the line for the Western railroad drama with this billboard for the last episodes.  If you're a fan of the show, be sure to also check out all the previous season billboards for Hell on Wheels.
Kingdom season 3 billboard
Mixed martial arts drama Kingdom was back for a fighting third season with this knockout ad creative.
UnREAL season 2 billboard
And Lifetime's acclaimed drama UnREAL, which goes behind-the-scenes of a reality dating show was back to manipulate the airwaves for a sophomore season.
Bloodline season 2 billboard
Netflix's family drama Bloodline had a slow start, but a riveting finish for its inaugural season. Now the close knit family are back for a second season in the Florida Keys to deal with the ramifications of the death of their brother and the coverup of his murder.
Scream season 2 TV billboard
And speaking of killers, MTV's scream series was back for a second season of teenage slaying.
Last Ship season 3 billboard
The Last Ship is also back this Summer for a third season of the military pandemic drama, no doubt resolving last season's deadly cliffhangers and by the looks of things exploring new destinations and threats on the open waters.
Americas Got Talent season 11 billboard
In the world of reality TV competitions, Simon Cowell joins the judging panel of America's Got Talent for its eleventh season.
Americas Next Top Model 23 VH1 teaser billboard
Plus just when you thought it was over, America's Next Top Model is moving to VH1 this Fall for a 23rd season (apparently without Tyra Banks in the judging panel though, just the producers chair).
Chef's Table season 2 billboard
Not everything Netflix produces is brilliant, but their foodie docu-series Chef's Table is certainly a great show. Brilliant cinematography and direction combined with interesting professional chefs highlighting their passion and artistry. I'm looking forward to the second season of episodes.
American Ninja Warrior 2016 season 8 billboard
From a passion for food to a dedication to fitness, and American Ninja Warrior returns for an eighth season of contestants proving their ingenuity, strength and stamina.
Top Gear season 23 billboard
BBC's Top Gear also returns for a 23rd season this May with a whole new team at the wheel, car enthusiast and Friends star Matt LeBlanc and the U.K.'s Chris Evans take over from the popular co-presenters Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond and James May.
Giant Silicon Valley season 3 billboard
In the world of comedy, the satirical tech series Silicon Valley returns for a third season with this giant-sized billboard along the Sunset Strip.
Casual season 2 billboard
Hulu's dysfunctional family comedy Casual returns to the skies and subscription streaming platform for a second season.
Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt season 2 SMD billboard
Plus these abbreviation billboards for Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt's second season continued to make me laugh out loud this month.
Lady Dynamite series premiere billboard
Meanwhile another quirky Netflix comedy made its debut with this mind-bending ad creative for Lady Dynamite.
Grace and Frankie season 2 billboard
And Lily Tomlin and Jane Fonda were back as best frenemies in the sophomore season of Netflix's sitcom Grace and Frankie.
Chelsea Netflix talk show billboard
Like I said earlier, Netflix continued to churn out the programming and this month it launched Chelsea Handler's new late-night talk show. It'll be interesting to see how a three-night a week format works on the binge-watching streaming service.
Brad Williams Daddy Issues comedy special billboard
Brad Williams had this fun baby carrier ad creative for his Daddy Issues comedy special on Showtime.
Ali Wong Baby Cobra comedy special billboard
Whilst comedian Ali Wong had this fabulously retro 'Attack of the 50-foot woman' homage billboard for her Baby Cobra standup special on Netflix.
Prank Academy YouTube Red billboards
YouTube Red continued to promote the shows on its new paid-for service, like this cleverly placed Prank Academy billboards.
Giant Bad Internet YouTube Red billboard
Whilst its new Black Mirror parody series, Bad Internet, took over the Sunset Strip with this giant-sized wallscape and additional billboards along the busy commuter corridor.
Bad Internet YouTube Red billboard
Not to be left out, on-demand platform Vimeo also had this ad creative for its Lonely and Horny comedy series.
Lonely and Horny Vimeo billboard
As you can see from all these TV offerings, there's almost too much TV to watch these days (let alone photograph in the city skyline).

Come back soon for all the 2016 Emmy consideration billboards also filling L.A.'s streets and skies, but in the meantime be sure to check out what TV show billboards were gracing the sprawling city skyline last May.

Keep your eyes to the skies...
