Fab new movie costumes and Q&As in La La Land...

This past month I've been trying to catch up on as many new movie releases as possible, like Victoria & Abdul, Battle of the Sexes, Kingsman: The Golden Circle and Stronger, and at the same time checking out al the new film costume exhibits at my local ArcLight Hollywood cinema.

I really loved the new British royal period drama Victoria & Abdul, and in addition to seeing these costumes designed by Consolata Boyle on display in the foyer, I also got the opportunity see the movie and attend a Q&A with the star Dame Judi Dench and the director Stephen Frears after the screening.

After the movie I also went home and rewatched 1997's Mrs. Brown, the last time that Judi Dench had played 'Queen Victoria' and then returned to the ArcLight to rewatch Victoria & Abdul for a second viewing as my husband, who's a big Dame Judi fan, wasn't able to attend the special Friday afternoon Q&A.

Another costume exhibit at the ArcLight Hollywood in September was for the Rodarte fashion-designing sisters directorial debut, Woodshock.

Kate and Laura Mulleavy were also Costume Designers on the movie with Christine Wittenborn, and this Woodshock costume exhibit for the movie grew in size on the different occasions I visited the venue.

At the moment the cinema has these fantastic period costumes from Goodbye Christopher Robin on display, designed by Odile Dicks-Mireaux and worn by Domhnall Gleeson, Margot Robbie and Will Tilston in the film about the origins of 'Winnie-the-Pooh' and his author A. A. Milne.

In addition, the venue currently also has these futuristic costumes from sci-fi sequel Blade Runner 2049 on display.

These outfits worn by Ryan Gosling, Ana de Armas and Harrison Ford in the movie were designed by RenĂ©e April and were cool to see in person, certainly evoking the futuristic fashion of the 1982 cult classic.

As you can see it's been an exciting few weeks for movie lovers, let's hope this behind-the-scenes trend continues in the coming weeks...

Past Halloween costumes to inspire this year's look...

This year I'm really struggling with my Halloween costume choice and let's face it at the moment I could use a good distraction from all the horrors of the world. So I decided to revisit my past looks to see if they'd help spawn some costume ideas for this year, although I'm thinking this year I really want to do something topical, or make a political statement in some form or fashion.

Halloween 2016
Dead Robin Halloween costume
Last Halloween my inspiration came from the Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice movie in which the graffitied costume of the Caped Crusader's sidekick, 'Robin', was glimpsed. I took that to be a perfect excuse to recycle and old store-bought fancy dress outfit into a Dead Robin look and that Halloween makeup doesn't come cheap, so it's great to get more use out of it.

Halloween 2013
Halloween Zombie Bride costume
In 2014 and 2015 I missed West Hollywood's Halloween festivities because I was running the New York City Marathon both years, but in 2013 I transformed myself into a Zombie Bride to celebrate the fact I'd gotten married in July.

Halloween 2012
Halloween Zombie Wonder Woman costume
Obviously with The Walking Dead being one of my favorite TV shows zombie looks have featured heavily in my Halloween costumes over recent years. In 2012 worlds collided as I mashed up zombie gore with my favorite super-heroine 'Wonder Woman'.

In fact I was actually recycling my Wonder Woman costume from the previous Halloween, which I'd originally bought to run the Bay to Breakers race in San Francisco, so that was money well spent.

Halloween 2010
Halloween Spiderman Glinda costume
Back in 2010 I was experiencing my third Halloween in West Hollywood and added some new gloves and mask to my Spider-man costume, although over the years I've discovered that it's handy to choose a costume with pockets for all your essentials, like money, phone and photo ID.

Halloween 2009
Halloween Batman Robin costumes
In 2009 we did out first couple costume and who better than the 'Dynamic Duo' to patrol the streets of West Hollywood. As you can see above, this 'Robin' costume got a zombified makeover years later.

Halloween 2008
Halloween Wolverine Batgirl SpiderMan costumes
The Halloween of 2008 was my first ever experience of spooky festivities here in the U.S., let alone in L.A., and it was certainly an eye-opening experience for someone who hadn't grown up here. Americans take their Halloween seriously and I knew in future years I'd need to up my game.

As you can see, over the years I've had a certain penchant for superhero costumes regardless of the gender, so this year I may just have to hang up my tights and cape and try something complete different.

Watching Project Runway and RuPaul's Drag Race makes me want to grab a hot glue gun and 'make it work' so I'd best put my thinking cap on, although I do have a semblance of an idea beginning to germinate in my skull. My problem is that sometimes my ideas get lost in translation and what I see in my head doesn't always make it into the real world.

No pressure, but the clock's ticking...
