Fabulous fashion billboards filling L.A.'s February 2017 skies...

This past month raincoats and umbrellas may have been in vogue around Los Angeles compared to flip-flops and shorts, but the new Spring 2017 season fashion billboards certainly tell a sunnier story. Here's a cool collection of all the stylish clothing and beauty billboards turning heads this February.

Enjoying the delights of the 25th Art of Motion Picture Costume Design exhibit at L.A.'s FIDM Museum...

Regular visitors to Jason in Hollywood will know that Im a huge film fan and love seeing costume exhibits in person (almost as much as hunting down fun billboards in the skies of L.A.), especially when they are out of their reflective cases and you can see from almost any angle.

Oscar-nominated La La land movie costumes FIDM Museum
Usually I spy exhibits for movies one at a time when I'm fortunate enough to see them at my local ArcLight cinema, the El Capitan Theatre, on studio backlot tours, or at conventions, but the Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising in Downtown L.A. makes all my dreams come true by offering a smorgasbord of costume designs from the past twelve months, including the Oscar contenders for Best Achievement in Costume Design.
Hidden Figures Batman v Superman movie costumes
Where else can you find DC Comics superhero costumes side-by-side with Hidden Figures movie costumes, or wardrobes from period dramas next to comedies, outlandish sci-fi outfits next to clothes worn in historical dramas or spy thrillers.
FIDM Museum movie costume exhibition
This year at the 25th Art of Motion Picture Design exhibition, which runs until April 22, 2017 from 10am to 5pm with free admission Tuesday to Saturday, you'll find amazing looks from films like Batman v Superman, Fences, Zoolander 2, Dr. Strange, Live by Night, Love & Friendship, Star Trek: Beyond, Silence, Suicide Squad, Hail, Caesar!, The Huntsman: Winter's War, Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children, Nocturnal Animals, Alice through the Looking Glass, Captain Fantastic, Rogue One and even dressed maquettes from the Oscar-nominated animated movie Kubo and the Two Strings.
Film costumes FIDM Museum LA
The exhibit also includes Academy Award nominee designs from La La Land, Florence Foster Jenkins, Allied and Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them (although they didn't seem to have any Oscar-nominated Jackie movie costumes, although I did see Natalie Portman's Jackie film costume on display at ArcLight Hollywood before Christmas).
Oscar nominated Allied movie costumes
Over the past year I've been lucky enough to see some of these costumes on display already around L.A., but there's nothing like having another look at them in all their glory, to see the details and workmanship that all the costume makers put into these fabulous garments (especially if you've watched the film itself).
25th Art of Motion Picture Costume Design exhibition
The costumes are always presented wonderfully and there's almost too much to take in in one visit, so I'm sure this won't be the last time I attend this exhibition before it is over.
25th Art of Motion Picture Costume Design exhibition
I'm not sure if I can say I had a favourite movie exhibit, but I have been wanting to see Marvel's Dr. Strange costumes up close, plus The Huntsman: Winter's War movie costumes and Florence Foster Jenkins costumes were also a must-see.
Rogue One movie costumes FIDM Museum
Only in recent years has the FIDM Museum allowed non-flash photography, so be sure to also check out these past movie and TV costume exhibits at the venue, and stay tuned for more detailed glimpses of all the costumes at my dedicated Hollywood Movie Costumes and Props Blog in the coming weeks.

But don't take my word for it, if you live in L.A. or nearby, be sure to check it out yourself if you can...

A glorious visit to the Huntington Botanical Gardens...

The thing I remember the most about my first visit to the Huntington Botanical Gardens about seven years ago was the cacti to be found in the Desert Garden area, on my return on Monday I still found this the most captivating garden to walk through.

Cacti Huntington Botanical Gardens
With my parents visiting from Wales for the third time since we've been here, and having enjoyed L.A.'s attractions like the Griffith Observatory, The Getty Center and Getty Villa, Venice Beach, Santa Monica Pier and 3rd Street Promenade and more in the past, we thought we'd enjoy the great weather and take a trip to Pasadena.
Huntington Desert Garden
Coming from rainy Britain it would be almost impossible to grow a garden full of cacti and succulents in the same way as you can in Southern California, so I think that's why I like the spikey plants and trees to most.
Huntington Desert Garden cacti
Even though it was a Monday the gardens were still busy, although we did manage to avoid the hordes of noisy school children for most of our visit.

And after the recent deluge of rain in L.A. the foliage seems even more vibrant and lush, although all the grass and plants in the gardens made me wonder how they coped with the recent Californian drought conditions.
Huntington Garden Lily Pond Pasadena
The last time I'd been at the Huntington Botanical Gardens it had been April 2010 and there were far more flowers in bloom, although the weather was far more gloomy.
Huntington Chinese Garden Pasadena
With my allergies I probably dodged a bullet by going at this time of year than in the spring, although in California things seem to flower all year around.
Huntington Gardens Conservatory Pasadena
A few things had changed in the intervening years, like the addition of the Orbit Pavilion installation which allows you to hear the sounds of NASA satellites orbiting in space, plus the Chinese Gardens area seems to be expanding in size considerably.

A week before when my parents had arrived the temperature in L.A. was quite chilly, whilst the sun was fierce for our visit as the skies slowly clouded over.

As the sun shone it was also cool to see the snow-covered mountains in the distance, which was an amazing contrast to the lush green vegetation surrounding us.

All in all it wasn't a bad way to spend one of the last days in January...

Out of this world movie costume displays around L.A. in the New Year...

Sometimes you need a distraction to get through these dark days, so here's a few film costume exhibits around L.A. at the moment to help lift your spirits.

Original Rogue One: A Star Wars Story film costumes
at the El Capitan Theatre in Hollywood
You'll find these original Rogue One: A Star Wars Story movie costumes co-designed by David Crossman and Glyn Dillon on display at Hollywood Boulevard's El Capitan Theatre until February 5, 2017.

Stormtroopers at the El Capitan Theatre's Rogue One screenings

I've now seen the movie on the big screen three times, and I even took my parents visiting from Wales to see it and they enjoyed it. Now more than ever the themes of good people rebelling, resisting and standing up to an evil empire resonant deeply.

Hidden Figures movie costume exhibit
at ArcLight Hollywood cinema
From a galaxy far, far away to a film that helped launch America into the space race and these original Hidden Figures film costumes designed by Renee Ehrlich Kalfus were photographed on display at ArcLight Hollywood.

It's one of my favorite films of last year, we saw it on New Year's Eve, and the true story about three intelligent and talented African-American women helping NASA's space program in the 1960s is more inspiring than ever now and a tale that needs telling to inspire current and future generations.

20th Century Women movie costume exhibit
at ArcLight Hollywood cinema
20th Century Women movie costumes
Another film about strong, independent women set in 1970s California is 20th Century Women and these film costumes designed by Jennifer Johnson were also snapped on display at ArcLight Hollywood.

Be sure to also check out other recent movie costume and prop exhibits at local L.A. cinemas in this run up to awards season, and let's hope they continue to inspire and delight, because I have a feeling we'll be needing escapism more than ever to deal with all the political nonsense in the coming months.

Hooray for Hollywood and all the costume designers, filmmakers and dreamers out there...
