I fell prey to Predators...

I knew I shouldn't, but I couldn't resist going to see this new back-to-basics installment in the Predator franchise. Even though it's an enjoyable sci-fi action romp, it didn't really add anything new to the proceedings, in fact it's a bit of a rehash of the 1987 original.

So same old, same old. More rip-off than homage. Instead of a team of commandos in a Central American jungle hunted by one alien, it's the Earth's deadliest human predators, from special ops agents, to mercenaries and FBI most wanted convicted killers, stranded on an alien game reserve and hunted by a trio of Predators.

It's a nice evolution of circumstances, but there really isn't anything new here, no real surprises or shocks at all. The film does have great production values, with some fantastic locations making the jungle terrain look vaguely like an alien planet and there are some solid performances from the likes of Adrien Brody and Alice Braga.

But then here's the bad, the formulaic way the hunted are killed off one by one to such obvious characters like Topher Grace's 'ordinary' doctor, who unsurprisingly turns out to be anything but.

It's really a film for fans who love those crab-face critters and love seeing their Predators using their trademark weapons, fighting amongst themselves and ripping their bloody trophies from their human victims.

Predators is entertaining popcorn sci-fi, it's just not very challenging or original. And after you've recently seen such a complex and engaging film as Inception, it's hard not to think of this otherworldly sequel as just a bit of fun fan fluff.

I give Predators three *** stars, mainly because I like the genre and because I have seen much worse movies this year.

Hey Hollywood Movie Studios, let's see more original sci-fi concepts and start making some modern day classics like the Predator, Alien and Terminator films of old...
