Movie and music billboards filling L.A.'s skies in June 2014...

TV billboards may have monopolised the city skyline this past month, but even though there were fewer movie billboards, there were some films that made more 'noise' than others, specifically those robots-in-disguise. Here's a selection of the movies, music and theme park outdoor ads gracing L.A.'s skies in June.

Movie billboards
Transformers Age of Extinction Optimus Prime extension billboard
Optimus Prime and his Transformers allies and enemies were back for a fourth outing this Summer and even though the movie may be overlong, with mindless CGI action and explosions (and not forgetting Dinobots), the marketing campaign for the blockbuster was as in your face as ever.

If you like these cool billboard examples, be sure to also check out the full onslaught of billboards for Transformers: Age of Extinction
Transformers Age of Extinction special extension billboard
Another franchise returning this Summer is The Purge: Anarchy, which sees America enjoy another twelve hour period where all crime is legal, including murder, arson and more depraved actions besides. The first movie was a home invasion horror, whilst this sequel takes to the killing streets of L.A., which should make for disturbing viewing for us living here.
The Purge Anarchy movie billboard
If you like this menacing giant ad creative along Sunset Strip, be sure to check out the other movie billboards for The Purge: Anarchy from around the streets of L.A.
Dawn of the Planet of the Apes movie billboard
One film I'm really looking forward to this Summer is the Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, which is a follow up to the 2011 reboot and picks up where the first film left off, with Caesar and his super-evolved tribe of chimps, gorillas and orangutans versus the remnants of a decimated human population after a pandemic virus has almost wiped them out.
Earth to Echo movie billboard
From apes to aliens, and this Summer Earth to Echo sees a stranded alien helped by a group of human children. Sound at all familiar to a certain 80's classic? Cough, E.T.
Jersey Boys movie billboard
This month saw the Jersey Boys in the skies of L.A. for Clint Eastwood's adaptation of the musical biopic of The Four Seasons (the rock 'n' roll group, not the hotel chain).
The Case Against 8 HBO movie billboard
Plus as June was LGBT Pride month in the U.S. I thought it important to feature this HBO billboard for The Case Against 8 documentary about how the plaintiffs and their lawyers helped overturn Proposition 8 in California, the discriminatory anti-gay law which banned same-sex marriage in the state for a time. This month actually marks the one year anniversary of gay marriage becoming legal again here in California.
Tammy movie billboard
Meanwhile Melissa McCarthy is back this Summer with Tammy, a new comedy that is co-written and directed by her husband, Ben Falcone.
Deliver Us From Evil movie billboard
And if you're looking for more horror this Summer, then Deliver Us From Evil has all the exorcisms and demonic possessions you could possibly need, all apparently based on true stories.

Theme park billboards
Giant Despicable Me Minion Mayhem ride billboard
On a lighter note, the new Despicable Me Minion Mayhem ride is now open at Universal Studios Hollywood and has this giant billboard in the heart of Hollywood to attract all the tourists bored with looking at stars on the Walk of Fame.
Disney Cars Land 2014 billboard
Plus Disney California refreshes its Cars Land billboard ad campaign for this Summer season.

Music and radio billboards
Janelle Monae Google Play your heart out billboard
I saw Janelle Monáe at the Hollywood Bowl the other day and she was amazing, so it's no wonder she's featured on a billboard for Google Play's music offering.
Sam Smith In the Lonely Hour album billboard
Plus fellow Brit Sam Smith continues his U.S. invasion with the release of his first album, In the Lonely Hour.
KCRW Radio For the curious Watts Towers billboard
Meanwhile other news from the airwaves comes in the form of more of KCRW's latest 'for the curious' ad campaign, which zeroes in on details of infamous L.A. landmarks and monuments like the Watts Towers and Chicken Boy restaurant sign.
KCRW Radio For the curious Chicken Boy billboard
So, as you can see with all these outdoor advertisement round-ups it's been a crowded skyline this month.

Let's see if July is as jam-packed with visual goodies...

TV billboards dominate the skies of L.A. in June 2014...

If you think there was a plethora of fashion, drinks and lifestyle billboards filling the skies of L.A. in June you were right, but not as many as TV billboards, as it's been another huge month for fans of the small screen, mainly because of all the studios and networks trying to garner Emmy voter nominations.

TV billboards
Broad City two Jews Emmy 2014 billboard
Comedy Central had a fun Emmy campaign for both its Key & Peele sketch show and its freshman comedy Broad City, unafraid to poke fun at themselves and the entertainment industry.
Brooklyn Nine-Nine Emmy 2014 billboard
Meanwhile rookie cop sitcom Brooklyn Nine-Nine had this 'awesome' offering to try and grab attention and maybe give Andy Samberg something to add to the Golden Globe he picked up earlier this year for the show.
Breaking Bad final episodes Emmy 2014 billboard
And Breaking Bad may be over, but that doesn't mean there's not one more chance for 'Walter White' to win big at award season for the final episodes of the critically-acclaimed drama.
House of Cards Emmy Consideration 2014 billboard
Plus I'm currently watching the second season of House of Cards and it would be a travesty if this clever drama didn't win several awards for acting and writing, because Robin Wright clearly deserved that Golden Globe for her scheming portrayal of 'Claire Underwood'. Both her and Kevin Spacey are amazing to watch in action.
Walking Dead Glenn Maggie Emmy 2014 billboard
Another favourite show of mine, maybe my number one series, truly deserves some accolades this year for another spectacular season. The Walking Dead is much more than just zombies and gore, it's about very human drama and it's riveting. After every episode I'm left wanting more, which is always a great sign of a good show.

If you're a fan like me, be sure to also check out more of this Something Human Emmy billboard campaign for The Walking Dead's fourth season.
Rick Hoffman Suits 2014 Emmy Consideration billboard
USA Network's Suits wanted to get in on the Emmy action too this month with this devilish billboard for one of its stars, Rick Hoffman.
Resurrection Emmy 2014 billboard
Plus ABC Studios was supporting its back form the dead drama, Resurrection's debut season.

If you like this selection, be sure to also check out these other Emmy 2014 Consideration billboards for many more TV shows, plus HBO's cohesive Emmy Consideration ad campaign and Mad Men's 60's style faux product Emmy billboards which live up to the series advertising agency setting.
The Leftovers giant series premiere billboard Sunset Strip
In addition to all the Emmy-themed billboards, there were plenty of outdoor ads for this Summer's new and returning shows, like this super-sized creative for HBO's new drama, The Leftovers, which takes place in a world where 2% of Earth's population have been raptured away by some unknown force.
Dominion series premiere billboard
Speaking of divine forces and 2010's Legion movie gets a Syfy channel spin-off this Summer called Dominion, which picks up the action of the apocalyptic angel versus human war 25 years later. I think this series premiere billboard design inspired by a Guido Reni painting of the Archangel Michael is a great juxtaposition of classic and contemporary, with the sword-wielding archangel facing off against a gun-toting human.
The Strain series launch billboard
One of the best TV billboards this month though, has to be this cringe-worthy ad creative for Guillermo del Toro's vampire book trilogy adaptation, The Strain. If a worm parasite forcing its way out of an eyeball doesn't make you feel a bit squeamish, then you're probably dead inside.
Crossbones series premiere billboard
Meanwhile on the high seas John Malkovich was starring as the notorious Pirate Captain 'Blackbeard' in NBC's Crossbones, although methinks they were beaten to the punch by Starz Black Sails series earlier this year.
Last Ship giant series premiere billboard
Another nautical themed new series in the skies this month was The Last Ship, starring former Grey's Anatomy star Eric Dane as a Navy Commander in the wake of a global pandemic which has wiped out 80% of the world's population.
Giant Falling Skies season 4 billboard
Speaking of dire situations, TNT's post-alien invasion series Falling Skies was back for a fourth season this Summer with all new threats for the human survivors and had this giant-sized billboard to herald its return.
Extant series premiere billboard
Meanwhile following the success of its Summer sci-fi series Under The Dome last year, CBS is trying its luck with another science fiction drama this season starring Halle Berry as an astronaut returning from a solo mission in space mysteriously pregnant in Extant.
Giant True Blood final season 7 billboard
From aliens to the supernatural and True Blood is back for its seventh and bloody final season with this giant Sunset Strip billboard. I can't wait to see who lives, who dies and who sleeps with who this season.
Teen Wolf season 4 billboard
From vampires to werewolves and Teen Wolf is back for a fourth season on MTV after a status quo major death shake up at the end of season three.
Witches of East End Darkness is rising season 2 billboard
And if bloodsuckers and shapeshifters weren't enough, Lifetime has a spellbinding sophomore season of the Witches of East End to entertain audiences this Summer, where dark forces are rising.
Ray Donovan season 2 billboard
Speaking of dark forces, and Showtime's 'fixer' to the stars and high-profile clients of Los Angeles is back for a second season in Ray Donovan.
Major Crimes season 3 billboard
Plus the Major Crimes unit led by Mary McDonnell's 'Captain Raydor' is back for a third season of LAPD investigations
Murder in the First series premiere billboard
And another crime drama joining the ranks of a legion of other procedural cop shows is TNT's Murder in the First, which stars Taye Diggs and Kathleen Robertson (who was great in Starz Boss series).
Orange is the New Black season 2 billboard
From solving crimes to doing time, and Netflix breakout women's prison dramedy Orange is the New Black is back for a second season.
Tyrant series premiere billboard
FX is taking a risk this Summer with its new Middle Eastern drama Tyrant, but at least it has one of the best visuals of the season to help kickstart the show.
The Bridge season 2 billboard
Plus The Bridge is back for a follow-up season of more crime-solving across two borders with this illustrated ad creative.
Masters of Sex season 2 billboard
Another show back for a second year is Showtime's 60's based drama Masters of Sex, which has fun with this paper bag ad creative, which evokes how adult book stores used to conceal your dirty magazine and film purchases.
Marriage Bootcamp Reality Stars season 2 billboard
From sexual relations, to marital ones, and returning for a sophomore season (but formerly known as Marriage Bootcamp: Bridezillas) is Marriage Bootcamp: Reality Stars with this fun creative which has a fake celebrity divorce prevention theme.
CeeLo Green's Good Life series premiere billboard
The reality shows keep coming with CeeLo Green's new series, The Good Life, which features the singer's childhood friends and fellow Goodie Mob rap collective members and sounds like an episode of HBO's Entourage drama series.
Big Smo series premiere billboard
All the networks are trying to find the new Kardashians or Duck Dynasty reality show replacement, so A&E's latest effort seems a bit desperate with Big Smo, about a country hip-hop artist, which sounds as appealing as watching paint dry.
Superjail season 4 billboard
Over on Adult Swim and Superjail! returns for a fourth animated season and doesn't disappoint with another chaotic, psychedelic season promo billboard filled with colourful, crazy characters and situations.
Giant Jennifer Falls series premiere billboard
And finally here's the two giant billboards that graced the opposite sides of this Sunset Strip building in June. First up on the westbound side was this super-sized creative for TV Land's new sitcom Jennifer Falls starring Jaime Pressly in the titular role.
Giant Rising Star series premiere billboard
On the flip-eastbound side was this super-sized creative for ABC's Rising Star, which is an interactive singing competition where the audience at home decides who succeeds, live (or that was the plan anyway, although it's proving to be trickier than it seems with different east and west coast time zones).

So as the evidence suggests, the skies of L.A. have been bursting with television show billboards throughout June, so it will be interesting to see if this trend continues into July.

Enjoy this collection of ad creatives and come back soon for this month's round-up of movie and music billboards for your visual delight.

Stay tuned...

Technology, drinks and lifestyle billboards around L.A. in June 2014...

One of the things I love about billboard advertising is that every month the city skyline is different and filled with loads of creative and innovative visuals to capture the imagination (which is probably the marketing geek in me speaking). Here's a collection of the best technology, drinks and lifestyle billboards gracing the skies of L.A. in June 2014.

Technology billboards
iPhone 5c colour fan effect on white background billboard
First up is one of my favourite campaign refreshes of the year as the Apple iPhone 5c welcomes its third wave ad campaign by using a fan effect of its different colour smartphones on it's signature white background.

If you like this striking billboard, be sure to check out the iPhone 5c launch billboards and iPhone 5c second wave ad campaign to see which of Apple's outdoor ads you prefer.
Organize share businesses you love Yellow Pages billboard
New to the skies of L.A. this month are these billboards for Yellow Pages, who are trying to reinvent themselves and stay relevant in today's fast-changing world, to make sure they don't go the way of brands like Kodak and Blockbuster. On the way out are the environmentally-unfriendly thick directory tomes in favor of instantly accessible smartphone and online technology and even a rebranding to YP.
Nest everyone talking thermostats billboard
Speaking of the technology of the future and Google-owned Nest has been shouting about its thermostats, although the big news is that the company has released a toolkit for other companies to make products compatible with Nest's smart home devices, so before long you really can do everything at home with the flick of a switch (or touch of a button).
Giant GoPro guitar billboard
And another company branching out this month is GoPro, highlighting with the giant new creative that its video cameras are not only for extreme sports like surfer, skiing and snowboarding, but are also cool accessories when you're playing a guitar at your latest gig.

If you like this super-sized wallscape be sure to also check out these other giant sporty GoPro billboards.

Drinks billboards
Dos Equis beard diplomatic immunity billboard
From the world of technology to the world of beverages, both alcoholic and soft drinks, and it's been a busy month. All the breweries and distilleries are keen to grab your attention as Summer holiday season arrives.

The Most Interesting Man in the World is back with another billboard from the witty Dos Equis beer ad campaign, so be sure to take a look at the other executions.
Peroni Beer sailor hat billboard
Plus after quite an absence, Peroni Nastro Azzurro is back in the skies of L.A. with this nautical themed creative.
Corona Beer Fill your summer billboard
Meanwhile Corona is all set for Summer, now all you need to do is find your beach to enjoy the refreshing brew.
Two ways to pick different Redd's Apple Ale billboard
And if you're looking for a different kind of ale this season to enjoy in the sunshine, then there's always Redd's Apple Ale, which apparently is brewed, not made from fermented apples like cider is.
Sobieski Vodka data mining billboard
If it's hard liquor you're looking for this Summer, then these topical and witty Sokieski Vodka billboards may tempt you to try Poland's finest.
Grey Goose Le Melon vodka billboard
Whilst if you like your vodka with a bit of flavour, then Grey Goose has the answer with its new Le Melon variant to chill out with.
BlackMask Spiced Pacific Rum billboard
And if you're looking for something a bit more tropical, then maybe BlackMask Spiced Pacific Rum will get you in the party mood.
Starbucks Iced Coffee billboard
For those of you who can't get enough coffee at your local Starbucks (and their millions of franchises on almost every street corner), then there's a new way to get their Iced Coffee at your local supermarket chiller cabinet.
Giant Jessica Alba Zico coconut water billboard Sunset Strip
And if you're looking for a healthier alternative to keep you refreshed and hydrated in the Summer heat, then Zico wants to tempt you to try their coconut water with their new ad campaign featuring Jessica Alba. Personally I preferred the previous Zico coconut water ad campaigns which were a bit quirkier and more humorous.
Giant Pepsi Real Big Summer billboard
Another brand trying to change perceptions is Pepsi, who along with the likes of Coca-Cola have been peddling calorie free and diet alternatives made with all kinds of sweeteners and chemicals these past decades, now want you to embrace their cola made with 'real sugar'. I'd laugh if it wasn't so tragic.

Auto billboards
Giant Cadillac 2014 ELR coupe billboard
In the world of cars, Cadillac made a big impact on the side of the Mondrian Hotel this month for its 2014 ELR Coupe.
Singing in the car is greater than in shower 76 gas billboard
Plus 76 gas stations continued their campaign featuring clever copy to help make motorists smile as they face their daily L.A. rush hour hellish commute.
Relax billboard is too high be hiding speed trap 76 gas billboard
If you like these ads, be sure to also check out these equally fun Stop Honkaholism billboards from 76 gas from this time last year.

Health and charity billboards
Why Worry Use a condom AHF billboard
They say a picture is worth a thousand words, and this 'Why worry?' safe sex condom billboard certainly makes for a simple and striking visual.
Smoking deaths this year and counting billboard
Meanwhile over in West L.A. along the busy Santa Monica Boulevard this anti-smoking billboard which uses a counter gimmick to get its 'smoking kills' message across finally got a refresh after years of it staying the same colour, helping it to stand out again after becoming almost like wallpaper on a daily commute the last few years. Be sure to compare it to the black anti-smoking billboard version from a few years ago to see how much more it stands out now.
Los Angeles LGBT Center Inspirational billboard
To celebrate LGBT Pride month the Los Angeles LGBT Center launched a vibrant new campaign to communicate their core brand values and new logo.

Sports billboards
Live Breathe Blue LA Dodgers baseball billboard
In the world of sports the L.A. Dodgers were still trying to get bums on seats for their baseball games.

Performing arts and exhibition billboards
2014 Hollywood Bowl billboard
Plus the Hollywood Bowl kicked off another season this month and I was lucky enough to enjoy Janelle Monáe perform at the magnificent outdoor amphitheatre last Sunday.
Wine Jazz Hollywood Highland billboard
In the same neighbourhood the Hollywood & Highland Center is getting ready for another swinging season of wine and jazz to entertain tourists and locals alike.
Pompeii Exhibition California billboard
Plus this striking billboard certainly does the job of enticing passersby to check out the Pompeii Exhibition at the California Science Center and the amazing thing is, that's no special effect visual.

As you can see it's been a crowded sky this month, and all these products, services and brands have also been competing for your attention with Summer movie blockbusters and new season TV shows, so stick around to see those billboards too.

Keep your eyes to the skies, as you'll never know what you'll see there...
