Head-turning TV billboards lining L.A.'s skies in May 2016...

This month there were so many TV themed billboards that I decided to present the new and returning shows separately from all the Emmy consideration billboards filling the city skyline. It's also that time of the year when the weather really doesn't want to cooperate with its gloomy 'May Grey' conditions, plus I was away for almost two weeks, but there was still a wealth of billboard ads trying to grab passersby attention.

TV billboards
LGBT viewers deserve better billboard
First up is an important billboard highlighting the treatment and positive representation of LGBT characters in TV shows, especially in light of many gay characters death this season on The 100, The Walking Dead and Blindspot to name but a few. Gay lives matter too, and we shouldn't be treated as just a convenient disposable plot line, or a bunch of tired old stereotypes.
Red Nose Day Special 2016 USA billboard
Another cause-related billboard in the skies of L.A. this month was for America's second official Red Nose Day, helping to raise funds for people and children living in poverty around the world. This ad creative featuring loads of celebs isn't as eye-catching as the Statue of Liberty 3D Red Nose billboard from last year though.
BrainDead series premiere billboard
The skies were filled with a whole smattering of new shows this month, including this cool cut-out special extension billboard for BrainDead, the new political series from the husband and wife writing team behind The Good Wife.
Giant Animal Kingdom series premiere billboard
One of my favourite visuals this month was this super-sized billboard for TNT's Animal Kingdom series. The burning palm trees certainly catch your eye for this television adaptation of the 2010 Australian crime drama film of the same name.
Preacher series premiere billboard
More arresting imagery this month was provided by AMC's small screen adaptation of the Vertigo Comics series, Preacher. This upside-down place of worship and clever 'beginning is nigh' tagline really helps the billboard stand out for the supernatural series.
Feed the Beast series premiere billboard
Another show on AMC pairs David Schwimmer and Jim Sturgess together as old buddies running a New York restaurant and all the shady dealings that can involve with gangsters and corrupt officials alike.
Queen of the South series billboard
Over on USA Network Alice Braga stars as the Queen of the South this Summer, a 'Queenpin of crime' based on Arturo Pérez-Reverte's best-selling book La Reina Del Sur.
Guilt series premiere billboard
Meanwhile Freeform (formerly ABC Family) has a new drama about an American student in London whose roommate is murdered, with her being the prime suspect in the death.
Roots TV remake billboard
This Memorial Day the iconic slave drama Roots got a mini-series remake for a new generation on History.
Hell on Wheels final episodes billboard
Aside from all the new freshman shows, there were many fan-favourites returning to the skies in May. Hell on Wheels had its fifth and final season split in two, and now it's the end of the line for the Western railroad drama with this billboard for the last episodes.  If you're a fan of the show, be sure to also check out all the previous season billboards for Hell on Wheels.
Kingdom season 2 part 2 billboard
Mixed martial arts drama Kingdom was back for the fighting second half of its sophomore season with this knockout ad creative.
UnREAL season 2 billboard
And Lifetime's acclaimed drama UnREAL, which goes behind-the-scenes of a reality dating show was back to manipulate the airwaves for a sophomore season.
Bloodline season 2 billboard
Netflix's family drama Bloodline had a slow start, but a riveting finish for its inaugural season. Now the close knit family are back for a second season in the Florida Keys to deal with the ramifications of the death of their brother and the coverup of his murder.
Scream season 2 TV billboard
And speaking of killers, MTV's scream series was back for a second season of teenage slaying.
Last Ship season 3 billboard
The Last Ship is also back this Summer for a third season of the military pandemic drama, no doubt resolving last season's deadly cliffhangers and by the looks of things exploring new destinations and threats on the open waters.
Americas Got Talent season 11 billboard
In the world of reality TV competitions, Simon Cowell joins the judging panel of America's Got Talent for its eleventh season.
Americas Next Top Model 23 VH1 teaser billboard
Plus just when you thought it was over, America's Next Top Model is moving to VH1 this Fall for a 23rd season (apparently without Tyra Banks in the judging panel though, just the producers chair).
Chef's Table season 2 billboard
Not everything Netflix produces is brilliant, but their foodie docu-series Chef's Table is certainly a great show. Brilliant cinematography and direction combined with interesting professional chefs highlighting their passion and artistry. I'm looking forward to the second season of episodes.
American Ninja Warrior 2016 season 8 billboard
From a passion for food to a dedication to fitness, and American Ninja Warrior returns for an eighth season of contestants proving their ingenuity, strength and stamina.
Top Gear season 23 billboard
BBC's Top Gear also returns for a 23rd season this May with a whole new team at the wheel, car enthusiast and Friends star Matt LeBlanc and the U.K.'s Chris Evans take over from the popular co-presenters Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond and James May.
Giant Silicon Valley season 3 billboard
In the world of comedy, the satirical tech series Silicon Valley returns for a third season with this giant-sized billboard along the Sunset Strip.
Casual season 2 billboard
Hulu's dysfunctional family comedy Casual returns to the skies and subscription streaming platform for a second season.
Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt season 2 SMD billboard
Plus these abbreviation billboards for Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt's second season continued to make me laugh out loud this month.
Lady Dynamite series premiere billboard
Meanwhile another quirky Netflix comedy made its debut with this mind-bending ad creative for Lady Dynamite.
Grace and Frankie season 2 billboard
And Lily Tomlin and Jane Fonda were back as best frenemies in the sophomore season of Netflix's sitcom Grace and Frankie.
Chelsea Netflix talk show billboard
Like I said earlier, Netflix continued to churn out the programming and this month it launched Chelsea Handler's new late-night talk show. It'll be interesting to see how a three-night a week format works on the binge-watching streaming service.
Brad Williams Daddy Issues comedy special billboard
Brad Williams had this fun baby carrier ad creative for his Daddy Issues comedy special on Showtime.
Ali Wong Baby Cobra comedy special billboard
Whilst comedian Ali Wong had this fabulously retro 'Attack of the 50-foot woman' homage billboard for her Baby Cobra standup special on Netflix.
Prank Academy YouTube Red billboards
YouTube Red continued to promote the shows on its new paid-for service, like this cleverly placed Prank Academy billboards.
Giant Bad Internet YouTube Red billboard
Whilst its new Black Mirror parody series, Bad Internet, took over the Sunset Strip with this giant-sized wallscape and additional billboards along the busy commuter corridor.
Bad Internet YouTube Red billboard
Not to be left out, on-demand platform Vimeo also had this ad creative for its Lonely and Horny comedy series.
Lonely and Horny Vimeo billboard
As you can see from all these TV offerings, there's almost too much TV to watch these days (let alone photograph in the city skyline).

Come back soon for all the 2016 Emmy consideration billboards also filling L.A.'s streets and skies, but in the meantime be sure to check out what TV show billboards were gracing the sprawling city skyline last May.

Fashion billboards stylishly filling L.A.'s skies in May 2016...

Even though I was overseas for two weeks in May, I have to say there seemed to be less fashion billboards filling the L.A. skyline this month. However, here's a collection of the eyewear, swimwear, underwear, apparel and jewelry outdoor ads that did catch my eye in May 2016.

Fashion billboards
Giant Chanel sunglass hut SS16 billboard
First up we have Cara Delevingne modeling Chanel's latest eyewear in this giant ad, available at Sunglass Hut.
H&M swimwear SS16 billboard
Next up H&M are getting ready for Summer with lots of affordable bikini and swimsuit looks for the beach and poolside.
Wildfox Summer 2016 fashion billboard

Coach SS16 fashion billboard
In the heart of Hollywood Coach was showing off its Summer looks and luxury designer handbags.
Joes Jeans SS16 hat billboard
Joe's Jeans was tipping its hat to Summer with this small ad creative along L.A.'s 3rd Street.
Paper 8 Apparel Psycho billboard
Paper8 apparel was filling the skyline with these illustrated designs inspired by iconic movies.
Paper8 apparel dog billboard
And regardless of the cool t-shirt designs, who can resist a billboard featuring a cute dog?
Keds Titans of industry Mavens of style billboard
Along Melrose Avenue Keds were showing off their timeless and classic footwear styles for women and if you like these ads, be sure to also check out this cool Keds billboard from recent months along the Sunset Strip.
2Xist swimwear SS16 billboard
With pool and beach season fast approaching (if we can get all this May Grey and June Gloom out of the way) 2(X)ist was filling the skies with their latest designer swimwear and underwear for men.
2Xist men's underwear SS16 billboard
If you like these sexy outdoor ads, be sure to check out more 2(X)ist billboards featuring model André Ziehe at my dedicated Daily Billboard Blog.

Jewelry billboards
Miranda Kerr Swarovski jewelry billboard
At the beginning of the month Miranda Kerr was super-sized for Swarovski jewelry over in Hollywood & Highland.
Apple Watch 2016 billboard
Whilst the Apple Watch was back in the skies of L.A. with a wave of new ad creatives and the smartwatch and its variety of stylish straps and bands is increasingly being marketed as wearable fashion.

As you can see there were less clothing and apparel billboards lining the city skyline this year, but be sure to compare this selection with these fashion billboards from May 2015.

Stay tuned for this month's TV and Emmy consideration billboards gracing L.A.'s crowded streets and skies, and come back next month for another roundup to see if there were more Summer fashion billboards trying to catch passersby eyes in June...

Blockbuster movie and music billboards around L.A. in May 2016...

Being away from L.A. for two weeks this past month didn't stop me from capturing a veritable smorgasbord of blockbuster movie and music billboards in May 2016, so enjoy this selection of film ad creatives from the big and small screen, plus the latest offerings from the music industry in the city skyline.

Movie billboards
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Cowabunga billboard
First up are some billboards from the ad campaign for the new Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles sequel. Initially I bemoaned the fact that the ads looked too similar to the 2014 movie reboot, but on my return from the U.K. I discovered that the La Brea Avenue corridor had been taken over by the heroes in a half shell.
Ninja Turtles Out of the Shadows movie billboard
I especially like the graffiti 'Cowabunga' design, but if you're fan make sure you check out all these billboards for TMNT: Out of the Shadows from around the streets of L.A.
Ghostbusters movie logo billboard
If the Ninja Turtles makes you feel nostalgic for the 90s, then this Ghostbusters logo will make you flashback to the 80s. This 'Who you gonna call' billboard is a teaser for the all-female reboot of the supernatural comedy franchise out this Summer, so I'm keeping my eyes to the skies for more billboards soon.
X-Men Apocalypse movie billboard
I haven't been that enamoured by the recent X-Men movies, Fox Studios jumbling up on continuity and characters irks my Marvel Comics fanboy sensibilities, but I have to say I really love the outdoor ad campaign for the new movie installment.
XMen Apocalypse movie billboard
Rather than a tired old group shot in superheroic poses, in the U.S. they've gone with ad creatives focusing on the iconic characters and their fantastical powers, so if you like these 'Jean Grey & Cyclops' and 'Magneto' examples, be sure to check out all these other X-Men: Apocalypse movie billboards.
Captain America Civil War movie billboard
Speaking of Marvel superheroes and the latest official installment from Marvel Studios, Captain America: Civil War was amazing. If you like this ad creative with Paul Rudd's 'Ant-Man' facing off against Don Cheadle's 'War Machine', you can also enjoy these other Captain America: Civil War billboards too.

Plus you can also check out the new look Ant-Man movie costume and more from the new film on display at my dedicated costumes and props blog.
Angry Birds Movie billboard
The Angry Birds made their leap from your smartphone app to the big screen this month, with a brand new animated movie.
special Angry Birds Movie billboard
If you like these examples from the ad campaign, be sure to check out 'Red', 'Chuck' and 'Bomb' in more fun billboards for The Angry Birds Movie in the skies around L.A.
Finding Dory movie billboard
And speaking of animated movies, Disney/Pixar's Finding Nemo gets a sequel this Summer with our favourite forgetful fish in the spotlight in Finding Dory. Love this special extension cut-out octopus billboard.
Disney Alice through Looking Glass movie billboard
Also in the magical world of Disney and here's another sequel filling the skies of L.A. this month. Despite all his marital problems at the moment, Johnny Depp is back as the eccentric 'Mad Hatter' and if you like this ad, be sure to check out all these other Alice Through the Looking Glass movie billboards.
Now You See Me 2 movie billboard
Speaking of magical sequels, and Now You See Me 2 is back with a whole host of stars dazzling the crowds with the latest thrills and stage illusions.
Giant Neighbors 2 movie billboard
Meanwhile Neighbors 2 opened this month and pitted Seth Rogen and Rose Byrne against rowdy sorority girls, leading them to call in a favour from the former frat boy enemy played by Zac Efron.
Popstar Never stop never stopping movie billboard
Also in the world of comedy and Andy Samberg was parodying the likes of Justin Bieber and his ilk in the new film Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping.
Central Intelligence movie billboard
Now I understand why Kevin Hart and Dwayne Johnson hosted the 2016 MTV Movie Awards, as they star together in the new Summer comedy Central Intelligence.
Special Correspondents Netflix film billboard
And speaking of odd pairings, Ricky Gervais and Eric Bana were in the skies this month for Netflix's movie remake of the French farce, Special Correspondents.
Do-Over movie billboard
Also on Netflix this month is another Adam Sandler movie, The Do-Over, part of his picture deal with the subscription streaming service.
Nice Guys film billboard
Meanwhile Russell Crowe and Ryan Gosling were teaming-up for this retro billboard and flashing back to the 70s for their detective comedy The Nice Guys.
Giant Money Monster movie billboard
The new thriller from Jodie Foster starring George Clooney and Julia Roberts, Money Monster, was super-sized on the side of the Sofitel Hotel along Beverly Boulevard this month.
Warcraft Unite teaser movie billboard
And whilst the Avengers were being divided in the latest Captain America film, the World of Warcraft games were being adapted for the big screen and the orcs and humans we being forced to unite to survive.
Conjuring 2 movie billboard
Another sequel coming your way this Summer is the horror The Conjuring 2, which sees the supernatural investigators 'The Warrens' tackling the U.K.'s infamous Enfield Haunting.
Me Before You movie billboard
From horror to romance (although that all depends on your point of view I'd imagine), and Games of Thrones Emilia Clarke and The Hunger Games Sam Claflin star in the adaptation of Jojo Moyes Me Before You book.
All The Way HBO film billboard
In the meantime on the small screen, the historical play All The Way was being adapted as a film for HBO starring Bryan Cranston in his Tony-winning Broadway role as 'President Lyndon B. Johnson' and Anthony Mackie as 'Martin Luther King, Jr.'
The Dresser Starz movie billboard
And on Starz the premium cable channel was remaking the play The Dresser, but who can argue when they cast acting legends Sir Ian McKellen and Sir Anthony Hopkins in the roles.
Giant Under the Gun documentary billboard
Plus Epix was making a spectacle in the skies for their eye-opening gun debate documentary, Under the Gun. These bullet-ridden Stars and Strips billboards were certainly striking.

Music billboards
Giant Guns N Roses tour billboard Sunset Strip
In the world of music, the recently reunited Guns N' Roses were super-sized along the Sunset Strip to promote their forthcoming concert tour this Fall.
Lionel Richie All Hits Vegas concert billboard
Plus the legendary Lionel Richie was bringing all his hits to Las Vegas and had another ad creative to promote his concerts along the Sunset Strip in May.
Prophets of Rage billboard
When I returned from my trip to Britain these cryptic Prophets of Rage billboards had also popped up along Sunset Boulevard, which apparently are not for a Rage Against the Machine reunion, but something else.
Ariana Grande Dangerous Woman billboard
And finally, the infamous doughnut-licker and singing sensation Ariana Grande was back in the skies this month for her new studio album, Dangerous Woman.

If you liked this collection of ads, why not compare them to all these movie and music billboards from last May and from May 2014.

Stick around in the coming days for more snapshots from the L.A. skies, including all the latest TV, Emmy awards campaigning and fashion billboards turning heads these past few weeks.
