Enjoying the 13th Art of Television Costume Design Exhibition at DTLA's FIDM Museum...

Yesterday to escape my never-ending window renovations (two and half months and counting), I took myself off to the Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising (FIDM) Museum in Downtown L.A. for the opening day of their 13th Art of Television Costume Design Exhibition, and I wasn't disappointed.

Personally I think it's the best selection of television costumes I've seen to date, quite possibly because it features wardrobes from some of my favourite shows like Pose, Game of Thrones and The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, but also because of the outlandish designs from shows like A Series of Unfortunate Events, The Masked Singer and Crazy Ex-Girlfriend.

I always love seeing costumes out from behind reflective glass display cases, so this annual celebration of television costume design is always a thrill for me, plus this year they really got the lighting right too, bravo.

The free exhibit also features some of this year's many Emmy nominees for Outstanding Costume Design, including The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel and Fosse/Verdon for best period costumes, Russian Doll and Black-ish for the contemporary category and the aforementioned Game of Thrones, A Series of Unfortunate Events and Good Omens for the fantasy and sci-fi genre.

There really is something for every TV taste at this extensive exhibition, from the worlds of comedy, period drama, fantasy, sci-fi and comic book, variety, musical and drama.

Plus the FIDM Museum hosts wardrobes from streaming services, cable channels and broadcast networks, so it really is showing off the best that this golden age of television has to offer.

In addition to those series already mentioned, the exhibit also features costumes from Gotham, Shrill, Sharp Objects, Future Man, Veep, The Man in the High Castle, Native Son, The Bold Type, Vanity Fair, Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, Outlander, Umbrella Academy and The Haunting of Hill House. Now that's someone to entertain everyone, young and old.

The current exhibition runs from now until October 26, 2019, Tuesday to Saturday, 10am to 5pm at the FIDM Museum & Galleries at 919 S. Grand Avenue in Downtown L.A., and it really is worth the trip if you can make it in person (plus in the spring they do a similar exhibition for the past year of movie wardrobes and Oscar hopefuls).
I'm sure I'll be back to take another look at this celebration of the last twelve months of television costume design and may even take along my fellow TV fans and costume aficionados alike.

If you like this amazing collection, be sure to check out the selection of television costumes from the 2018, 2017 and 2016 exhibitions and stay tuned to my costumes and props blog for a closer look at each and every one of the new TV wardrobes in the coming days and weeks.

Days like this really help me forget all the insanity in the world at the moment and remind me of the advantages of living in Hollywoodland...
