Fairytale, superhero and sci-fi costumes delights at Disney's D23 Expo 2019...

On Friday I ventured down to the Anaheim Convention Center to enjoy the magical delights of Disney's biennial D23 Expo.

More than a little magic at this year's D23 Expo

I've been attending the Disney fan event since 2011 and it has certainly evolved over time, incorporating all the different characters, movie and television properties now owned by Disney, from Marvel to Star Wars.

Superheroes, animation and sci-fi all under one roof

I not a huge fan of queuing in lines for anything, so I always like to turn up early and find all the best costume exhibits the expo has to offer.

This year the convention didn't disappoint with a wonderful retrospective of Heroes & Villains movie and TV costumes from the Walt Disney Archives.

The temptation of Enchanted

The spacious exhibit had a smorgasbord of costumes from stage and screen, wardrobes from classic fan favourites and more modern Disney live-action adaptations, like Maleficent, Alice in Wonderland, Into the Woods, Oz: The Great and Powerful, Tron: Legacy, Prince of Persia, Tomorrowland and Pirates of the Caribbean, to name but a few.

Mary Poppins in all her live-action incarnations

My favourite part of course was seeing all these amazing one-of-kind garments displayed without any reflective cases, something I wish Marvel Studios would have considered with their costume exhibit.

Costumes from Aladdin and Dumbo live-action adaptations

You see, I'm not one for panels and hall presentations. I get the excitement of being the first to learn something new with fellow fans, but most trailers and information usually ends up online with a few days or weeks, so I'd rather focus my attention elsewhere.

Once Upon a Time there was a villain named Cruella de Vil
I really like costume design, so I'm a sucker for a well curated exhibit, or a glimpse at future costumes yet to hit the big and small screen.

The Who, Which and Whatsit of A Wrinkle in Time

Of course sometimes they all seem to happen at once, as only the only day did this year's Art of Television Costume Design Exhibition open at Downtown L.A.'s FIDM Museum, than I get to see even more delights at the D23 Expo.

A trio of Disney witches

I loved the theming of the Heroes & Villains exhibit and how the costumes weren't all just displayed on mannequins, but some were posed, facing off in battle or accompanied by cars or fairytale carriages.

When announcements at the expo about the new Cruella de Vil movie starring Emma Stone, they even had a retrospective of costumes worn by Glenn Close in the live-action 101 Dalmatian movies and from Once Upon a Time on display.

That festive feeling from the Disney+ Noelle film

The expo was also a great place to show off Disney's forthcoming streaming service, Disney+ and shine a spotlight on some of its original content, like the new festive movie Noelle starring Anna Kendrick as the daughter of Santa Claus.

Lady and the Tramp gets the live-action Disney+ treatment

With its recent purchase of Fox Studios, Disney now also owns the controlling stake in streaming platform Hulu and they even had costumes and props from some of their shows like their Four Weddings and a Funeral adaptation, The Handmaid's Tale, Catch-22 and more besides.

The many looks of Marvel Studios Black Widow

There were plenty of announcements at D23 about the future of Marvel Studios television and movie offerings, from new shows like She-Hulk, Moon Knight and Ms. Marvel, plus footage from forthcoming films like Black Widow and they even had a retrospective exhibit of all her looks from Iron Man 2 to date, plus showed off her new white costume from her first solo movie.

The Mandalorian coming to a streaming platform far, far away

As well as treating fans to new footage from Star Wars: Rise of Skywalker, the expo also shone a spotlight on the new Disney+ show, The Mandalorian, with these fantastic costumes worn by Pedro Pascal and Gina Carano on display.

Do you know your Stormtroopers?

The Star Wars Stormtrooper parade of armour was also impressive, and I know some of these costumes may have appeared at other events and conventions, but they're no less impressive to see in person.

It's all over for another 2 years

As you can see there was something for everyone at the 2019 D23 Expo, and I'm sure many people spent far more time at the event than me, but I enjoyed exactly what I went for and look forward to returning to the magical convention in the future...
